Production Housing
While most mass produced housing has taken its lead from efficiency of construction and economy of materials, some modular housing companies have recognized the value of well designed homes, and chosen to focus on those aspects of factory construction that allow for more efficient and higher quality construction than site-built homes. Designers who work with modular housing must understand the companies' working methods, module dimensions, structural systems, and typical products list. Featured here is a house for the Indiana Building Systems Company.
In 2005 the Indiana Building Systems asked Hans Roegele to design their Show House for the Louisville Expo. This was intended to be a spacious residence that could work on a narrow city lot or a broad suburban lot, and be built either as a four-box, or with fold-up roof. Hans Roegele worked with IBS to incorporate details such as classical columns and door trim into their production system. The entire process- from first sketches to final construction- took six weeks. The house was built in IBS' factory, then shipped in modules to Kentucky, where it was re-assembled.
